Friends of Combe Down Surgery

Are you registered with Combe Down Surgery? If so, do you know about The Friends of Combe Down Surgery? We are a fundraising group which was set up in 1999, to raise funds to purchase equipment, etc. to assist in the smooth running of both the Main Surgery in Combe Down, and the Branch Surgery in Odd Down.

We hold monthly Coffee Mornings at Combe Down Surgery, usually the last Saturday in the month, and we have an Annual Sponsored Walk, and occasional Educational Evenings given by our Doctors or Nurses.

Initially we bought Blood Pressure Monitors, and plants and shrubs for the new Branch Surgery at Sulis Meadows. We have purchased Defibrillators for both Surgeries, and Staff have been trained how to use them in an emergency.

By 2006 we had raised enough money, with the help of some very generous donations, to purchase a Peugeot Montana, which has a ramp and wheelchair access. This vehicle is used on five mornings and one afternoon each week, to get elderly and infirm patients to their appointments at the Main Surgery. We are very fortunate to have a team of volunteer drivers. We ask for a small donation from the patients using the vehicle. We are very grateful to Combe Down Garage for sponsoring the servicing, etc. of the vehicle.

In 2010 we paid for the automatic door at the Main Surgery. This is a big advantage to patients in wheelchairs, or with walking aids or pushchairs. In 2011 we were left a large Legacy by a member of The Friends. We used this money to purchase several pieces of equipment for Sulis Meadows Surgery, including a lockable fridge for vaccines, a hydraulic couch for the Treatment Room, and an otoscope and ophthalmoscope, and we paid for a new ECG machine for Combe Down Surgery.

We have more recently provided otoscopes and ophthalmoscopes, and a new phlebotomy chair for the Main Surgery. We have also bought several chairs for both Surgeries, which have been fitted with ‘elephant feet’ to raise the height of the chairs.

Membership of The Friends is £5.00 per person annually, or £50.00 to become a Life Member. Members receive a Newsletter every few months, letting them know about future events.

If you would like to become a Friend, forms are available at both Surgeries.
